1. The son of God goes forth to war,
\n\tA kindly crown to gain;
\n\tHis bloodred banner streams afar:
\n\tWho follows in His train?
\n\tWho best can drink his cup of woe,
\n\tTriumphant over pain, Who patient bears
\n\this cross below He follows in His train.<\/p>\n
\t2. That martyr first, whose eagle eye
\n\tcould pierce beyond the grave;
\n\tWho saw his Master in the sky.
\n\tAnd called on Him to save like Him,
\n\twith pardon on his tongue, in midst of mortal pain,
\n\tHe prayed for them that did the wrong:
\n\tWho follows in his train?<\/p>\n
\t3. A noble band, the chosen few on whom the spirit came;
\n\tTwelve valiant saints, their hope they know,
\n\tAnd mocked the cross and flame.
\n\tThey met the tyrant’s brandished steel,
\n\tThe lion’s gory mane; They bowed their
\n\theads the stroke to feel:
