1. There were ninety and nine that safely lay in the shelter of the fold,
\n\tBut one was out on the hills away, Far off from the gates of gold
\n\t-Away on the mountains wild and bare, Away from the tender Shepherd’s care,
\n\tAway from the tender Shepherd’s care<\/p>\n
\t2. Lord, Thou hast here Thy ninety and nine; Are they not enough for Thee?
\n\tBut the Shepherd made answer; “This of Mine Has wandered away from Me;
\n\tAnd although the road be rough and steep, I go to the desert to find My sheep,
\n\tI go the desert to find My sheep.”<\/p>\n
\t3. But none of the ransomed ever know How deep were the waters crossed;
\n\tNor how dark was the night that the Lord passed thro’ Ere
\n\tHe found His sheep that was lost; Out in the desert
\n\tHe heard its cry sick and helpless and ready to die,
\n\tSick and helpless, and ready to die.<\/p>\n
\t4. “Lord, whence are those blood drops all the way
\n\tThat mark out the mountain’s track?”
\n\tThey were shed for one who had gone astray
\n\tEre the Shepherd could bring him back” “Lord whence are
\n\tThy hands so rent and tom? They’re pierced tonight by many a thorn;
\n\tThey’re pierced tonight by many a thorn”<\/p>\n
\t5. But all thro’ the mountains, thunder driven,
\n\tAnd up from the rocky steep. There arose a glad cry to the gate of heaven,
\n\t“Rejoice! I have found my sheep!” And the angels echoed
\n\taround the throne, “Rejoice, for the Lord brings back His own!
